This year we are SUPER Bucket Fillers!
During the 2013/2014 school year I introduced the idea of being a bucket filler to the students. This idea is from the book Have You Filled A Bucket Today? by Carol McCloud.
In a new twist on the Golden Rule, this book explains to children that we all carry an invisible bucket in which we keep our feelings about ourselves. When our buckets are full, we are happy; when they are empty, we are sad. It's important to know that we can fill our own bucket and so can others. We can also dip into it.
"Bucket fillers" are those who help without being asked, give hugs and compliments, and generally spread their love and good feelings to others. The metaphor of a bucket helps all children understand the importance of consideration and love. "Bucket dippers" rob us of happy feelings by refusing to help with a task or by saying or doing cruel things.
After listening to this wonderful book, I was very excited to share the book and the concept of "bucket filling" with all the students. We now share and discuss this concept on a daily basis and we feel we are well on our way to becoming a school filled with "bucket fillers!"
